30 by 30: Tasting Sushi

by Emily on February 19, 2012

My Mom came over for the weekend and let Patrick and I (and my brother and sister-in-law) have a date night! Thanks Mom!

We chose a Japanese place to eat, and then I remembered that tasting sushi was #29 on my 30 by 30 List. So I ordered something I knew I would like as my main meal and tasted one of Patrick’s tuna rolls.

You’ve probably already guessed by that last face, but I didn’t love it.

And yes, I know, Arkansas isn’t the best spot in the country for sushi, but Patrick has had sushi all over and is kind of a snob about it. He gave it two thumbs up.

And just for fun, I’m including this little bit of cinematic genius. I told Patrick to take a few pictures, but he decided to film it without my knowledge.

Have you ever watched people try to eat bugs on Fear Factor? Yeah, that’s pretty much it. The video is really dark, but only a minute and thirty seconds…

Ah, well. At least I can mark it off!

After dinner, Patrick looked across the table and asked, “So you wanna mark something else off your list?”

So we did. More details on that soon.

I’d be willing to try different kinds, I think. But first impression was pretty gross.

Oh my…I like fried sushi without ANY seafood (I get cream cheese instead) so I am pretty sure it’s not the real sushi haha, but it’s good to me! I would have had the same face and reaction had I eaten what you ate but at least you crossed it off that list!!

Yeah, the tempera variety appeals to me more, but I felt like I needed to try “real” sushi. That need has been met. Blech.

Sushi’s funny. The first time I had it, I also thought, “That was disgusting. Why anyone would like it is beyond me.” Then a few months later, I tried it again…This time I thought, “That wasn’t bad as I thought. Still not good, but not as nasty.” I kept trying it until now, I crave it and love it. Why I kept trying it, I don’t know…but it really did grow on me! :) Good for you for trying it, anyway!

Hmmm… I don’t know. I’d be willing to try other kinds. Especially the tempura rolls. The raw tuna was NASTY though.

Oh, man, I am laughing so hard! That video is priceless, Emily! Kudos for sucking it up and trying. I’ve tried it but I’m not a big fan. I still have Fugu on my bucket list of 100 things to do before I die. It is sashimi or chirinabe prepared poisonous puffer fish. (I already crossed off escargot, saki and cavier off my list)

Thanks Gen! I had no idea he was taking a video ( I told him to take pictures!) but it cracks me up too. Good luck working on your list too.
